Community Engagement Stories

Volunteers give teen brighter future

Maureen Bartz and Stacey Troshinsky have been volunteering at Rosemount Family Resource Center with their neighborhood group Glendalough of Evermoor for over a year. Maureen and Stacey have really connected with the kids in the neighborhood and especially a teen that has been through a lot.

Two months ago they decided that this teen needed extra support and they really wanted to make a difference in her life. These amazing volunteers teamed up to mentor this teen three days per week. They help her with homework, have meaningful conversations and talk about her bright future.

These volunteers went above and beyond! All their kindness, generosity of spirit, encouragement, and support has proven to be a success. This teen just came home with her fist “A” on her geometry test and she was so excited! She is beginning to see that people care about her and want to see her succeed.

Community garden gives mentors opportunity to connect with local children

Rosemount Family Resource Center and University of Minnesota Extension’s Master Gardening program have been excited to educate the community on healthy living emotionally and physically. One Saturday was deemed planting day at the Rosemount Family Resource Center.

We had wonderful volunteers come out and educate the children on nutrition. From there, each child got to pick out what vegetables they wanted to plant. Volunteers walked side-by-side with the children and planted vegetables. Once planting was done, the volunteers hosted a pizza party for the kids. Before they could eat pizza, a vegetable plate went around the table and everyone had to eat at least one vegetable.

Every Tuesday these wonderful volunteers meet with the children and maintain the garden. Half of the vegetables will go home with the children where they can share fresh vegetables and a healthy meal with their family. The children decided that they want the other half of the vegetables to go to our food shelf so that families in need would be able to get fresh vegetables. This wonderful community work continues the cycle of giving and receiving.
